While many courses are located outside the city's outer ring road, Loop 1604, there are a few golf courses very close to the center of San Antonio. One of these is Willow Springs Golf Course, which is located near the Joe Freeman Coliseum. The course plays around 7,000 yards off the blue tees, and features a monster par 5 on the second hole at 633 yards! The Riverside Municipal Golf Course is also located in San Antonio's city limits, located at 203 McDonald off Roosevelt Avenue. This facility offers something for everyone, with a 9-hole par 3 course and a 6,729 yard 18-hole course. Your round starts and finishes long, with the 528 yard hole 1 and the 600 yard hole 16, but there are also four par 3 holes on the course.
If you want to head just slightly farther out, the Alamo Golf Course on Rochelle in northwest San Antonio is a great choice. This is a full service facility, with a snack bar, a two story driving range, pro shop and a 4,700 yard executive course. The course makes a nice change of pace from some of the long courses around town, as it has relatively straight fairways and plays quickly, even for walkers.
Golfing in San Antonio is great, and unlike some cities you don't have to drive for a long time to reach the best courses; there are a number of courses within a twenty minute drive of downtown that will provide you with a scenic and challenging round.
